KEARNEY, Neb. — Saturday morning was quite a surprise for the citizens of Kearney, most notably the patrons of the city’s Good Samaritan Hospital. In the early hours of Saturday morning, a flash flood rapidly moved through the area and overwhelmed the city’s storm sewer infrastructure.

The two-story ground-to-ceiling windows of the dining room in the Central Café took most of the damage, though all patients and employees were safe.

Although the hospital’s storm water retention system and life stations operated properly, the enormous volume of water overwhelmed the system, flooding the hospital basement and creating water damage in other localized portions of the main GSH building.
