MANCHESTER, N.H. — A 19-year-old Manchester woman remained hospitalized yesterday after she was rescued late Saturday afternoon from the Winnipesaukee River in Laconia, where officials said she had been underwater for possibly as long as 10 minutes.
Ramatulia Kanu jumped into the river from the railroad trestle bridge and quickly began having trouble swimming, according to Marine Patrol Lt. Timothy Dunleavy. The bridge is behind the Laconia police station, and Kanu’s teenage relatives ran to the station for help, Dunleavy said.
A Laconia police officer entered the river and removed Kanu, performing CPR until an emergency medical crew arrived. She was taken to Lakes Region General Hospital and then flown to Dartmouth- Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, where she remained hospitalized yesterday afternoon, Dunleavy said. He said last night that he did not know anything more about her medical condition.
Marine Patrol officers and the Laconia Fire Department also responded to the accident at the river, which happened about 4:20 p.m. Saturday.
