2 women remain hospitalized after being hit by van

The van was driven by an 83-year-old man, with the women suffering serious injuries

BANGOR, Maine — Two Canadian women remained hospitalized Monday after being hit by a van driven by an 83-year-old Brewer man on Hogan Road Sunday evening.

Sandra Samuel, 62, of Lutes Mountain, New Brunswick, was listed in critical condition at Eastern Maine Medical Center as of 12:15 p.m. Monday, and Carole Day, 66, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, was listed in fair condition.

Day and Samuel were crossing Hogan Road just south of the intersection of Hogan Road and Longview Drive -- where The Olive Garden restaurant parking lot is located -- when they were struck about 6 p.m. Sunday by a 2003 GMC van driven by Martin Willis, 83, of Brewer.

Both women suffered serious injuries and were treated at the scene by Bangor Fire Department personnel before being transported to EMMC.

Officers from the Orono Police Department’s accident reconstruction team are assisting in the investigation. No charges are expected at this time.

Four witnesses, one a Bangor woman who is also a cardiac nurse at a local hospital, stopped to provide care and assistance to the victims after the accident, police said. The nurse provided life-saving emergency first aid to one of the victims before emergency medical services personnel arrived.
