LUDINGTON, Mich. — First responders saved six people from a log-jammed river during a thunderstorm Saturday night.
Several fire and police departments, including crews from the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, were called to the scene just before 10 p.m. An initial report said five victims – later confirmed to be six – were stuck on the river in canoes and kayaks. The victims, according to police, were stuck in waist-deep mud and were exhausted. One victim was reported in medical distress.
“First responders reported having to walk through waist-deep water pulling and pushing their boats over and around multiple log jams in an attempt to get to the victims,” Mason County Sheriff’s officials wrote on Facebook. “First responders reported being in the water more than they were on their boats. All while dealing with the thunderstorm above them.”
Two victims showed signs of hypothermia and a third was having heart complications, according to NYPost.com. All six were treated and later released at the scene by paramedics.
