CARMEL BEACH, Calif. — Two swimmers caught in a riptide Saturday afternoon at Carmel Beach were rescued by a state lifeguard.
Fire Capt. Ian Watts said an 11-year-old boy was being pulled out by the strong current when a father and son nearby tried to rescue him on their Boogie boards.
The son headed back to shore, and the father reached the boy. But they were still caught in the current while clinging to the father’s board.
The lifeguard swam out to them and helped them back to shore, Watts said.
They were examined by paramedics. The boy’s parents declined further treatment, but the father was transported to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
The call came in about 4 p.m. The swimmers were in the water between 8th Avenue and Del Mar, Watts said.
