SOUTH WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A paramedic leaving work after his shift was struck by a vehicle while riding his motorcycle home.
Cetronia Ambulance Corps Paramedic Sam Yerkes was only a mile away from the station when the incident occurred, WFMZ 69 News reported.
The South Whitehall Township Police Department wrote in a Facebook post that despite his injuries, Yerkes was maintaining a positive outlook.
“Sam suffered extensive, serious injuries as a result of the accident,” the post read. "[He] has and will continue to undergo multiple surgeries and will endure many months of rehabilitation. Sam is in good spirits and despite everything that has happened this weekend, he still has a smile on his face.”
Yerkes had volunteered to stay after his shift to help with an earlier incident of shots fired at a local mall.
A GoFundMe campaign was started to raise money for medical costs, with more than $5,500 raised of the $7,000 goal.
