Doctors were gravely concerned for patientwhen he was admitted, but he had since made remarkable progress

VICTORIA, Australia — A man mistakenly declared dead by paramedics after a horrific car smash has walked out of hospital.

Daniel Huf, who was pronounced dead at the scene of a Bacchus Marsh crash on April 1 despite still breathing, has been discharged and is recovering well, the Royal Melbourne Hospital said yesterday.

The hospital’s Intensive Care Unit deputy director Chris MacIsaac said doctors were gravely concerned for Mr Huf when he was admitted, but he had since made remarkable progress.

“Watching a patient progress from life support to discharge is very rewarding and we all wish Daniel the best in his continued recovery,” Prof MacIssac said.

Mr Huf’s family said his recovery was a miracle, and thanked hospital staff, as well as family and church friends, for their thoughts and prayers.

“We know that it is a miracle that Daniel can walk, read, speak some recognisable words, write logical messages and recognise his visitors,” his father, Colin Huf, said.

A report on the paramedics’ actions said they had noticed the 30-year-old was still breathing when they examined him in the wreck of his car, yet declared him dead and left the scene.

The paramedics were later called back to treat him after State Emergency Service volunteers freed Mr Huf from the wreckage and found he had a weak pulse.
