TILLAMOOK, Ore. — A tour bus fire sent eight people to the hospital Sunday and closed Highway 101 on the Oregon Coast, state police said.
Just before 4 p.m., a Raz Transportation bus with 33 passengers was on the highway north of Tillamook when the driver noticed smoke and flames coming out of the dashboard.
The bus driver pulled onto the shoulder and stopped. When he opened the door, the fire quickly spread inside the bus, police said, but passengers were able to escape through an emergency exit.
One person sustained a serious injury falling to the pavement while exiting through a bus window.
Eight people were transported to hospitals in Tillamook and Portland, including a 71-year-old woman suffering burns and smoke inhalation, KGW-TV, Portland, Ore., reported.
The highway was closed for about an hour while crews investigated.
Investigators said the bus was heavily damaged, and the fire appeared to be accidental.
