KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Five people, including a pregnant woman and two young children, were rushed to a local hospital following a head-on collision between two vehicles along Interstate 40 at Midway Road on Sunday morning, according to police.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at 10:39 a.m. after a Nissan Maxima traveling on eastbound I-40 hydroplaned, crossed the median and struck a westbound Ford Explorer, said Knoxville Police Department Sgt. Brian Evans.

The sport utility vehicle flipped and the Maxima caught fire, shutting down all westbound lanes at Midway Road for nearly two hours.

The Maxima’s pregnant female driver, along with an adult male passenger and a 3-year-old child, were transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Also taken to UT Medical were the Explorer’s adult female driver and a 6-yearold passenger.

None of the victims was identified and their conditions were not immediately available.
