MARKESAN, Wisc. — A dozen Markesan District Schools students are recovering Tuesday following a scary school bus crash on the way to school Monday morning, authorities reported.

The 12 students were among 27 on the bus that went off Hickory Road in the town of Mackford in Green Lake County at about 7:40 a.m. Monday.

District administrator Susan Alexander told madison.com only one student was admitted to the hospital, going first to Berlin Hospital then via helicopter to Neenah.

“Several other students were taken to their family physicians by their parents,” Alexander said.

The bus was carrying students from the elementary, middle and high schools, and was on one of 10 routes run by the school district.

According to the crash report, the bus was westbound on Hickory Road when it ran off the road into the ditch, hit an embankment for a field road, went airborne, landed in the ditch once again and came back out on the road.

The crash is under investigation by the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Alexander said the bus company, Fair Water Garage, has served the school district for many years.
