SPRING TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Twelve people were injured Friday night after a 14-car crash on an icy Interstate 99 exit near Pleasant Gap.

The accident occurred on the southbound overpass of Exit 81 a little before 6 p.m., blocking the road for almost three hours and forcing some emergency responders to arrive by driving the wrong way up the ramp.

State police said the chain-reaction collision, apparently caused by a snow squall icing the overpass, involved about 40 people. Police are investigating the crash. Of the 12 victims taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center for treatment, two were hurt badly enough to require paramedic care, said Randy Rockey, assisting at the scene as the county’s emergency management director.
