Delaware lawmakers may fund $8.5M EMS shortfall

A task force found 40 of 54 companies were running on a deficit, and a package of four bills would benefit services across the state

DOVER, Del. — Citing an $8.5 million annual shortfall threatening to curb ambulance services to residents in medical need, a bipartisan group of legislators gathered Wednesday to announce plans to ease the danger.

A package of four bills designed to enhance volunteer Emergency Medical Services operations was introduced at Legislative Hall, which drew the applause of a large group of uniformed Delaware Volunteer Firefighter’s Association members.

The bills, sponsored by Sen. Bruce Ennis, D-Smyrna, in the Senate and Reps. Melanie George Smith, D-Bear, and Bill Carson, D-Smyrna, in the House, were the result of a report produced by a state-created EMS task force and released in February.
