ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — The community is invited to Double Vision Bar and Grill for “Ride for Zach” on Saturday, June 5, to rally around Zach Long, who was injured last fall.
Long is a recognizable figure around Richmond County, having worked with the Richmond Rescue Squad as an EMT and as a volunteer firefighter.
He was injured by a drunk driver on Halloween night on Rockingham Road. He suffered a shattered hip bone and multiple other broken bones, and was in the hospital for about 45 days.
“I think the community will rally and make this a big fundraiser,” said Robin Roberts, Long’s godmother. “I know he needs the help.”
The funds will be going toward Zach’s medical expenses and traveling costs from going to Chapel Hill for treatment.
Roberts was present with Zach on the night of the accident. She said that he’s always helping anyone in need.
Sarah Holder has known Zach her entire life and is currently one of his nurses.
“He’s got a heart of gold,” Holder said. “He’ll put a smile on your face. He’s always been there if someone needs a ride somewhere or someone broke down. Zach will give the shirt off of his back for you.”
The process of recovery is coming along, said Holder. Zach is able to get around with the help of a walker, but has some nerve damage in his ankle. They’re taking it “one day at a time,” and Zach is in good spirits.
Motorcycles, cars or bicycles are welcome for the ride. According to the announcement, kickstands will be up at 1:00 p.m. A rain date is scheduled for the following day. For more information, direct message Sarah Holder on Facebook.
Food and door prizes are scheduled for the event. Live music and a cornhole tournament are tentatively planned.
“We as a community love him and appreciate all that he has done,” Roberts said. “Now, it’s time for us to rally around Zach.”
