QUEENSLAND, Australia — The teenager was clinging to a tree as floodwaters surged past him near the town of Rockhampton, in the state of Queensland, which was being pummelled by strong winds and rain.
A local TV crew filmed emergency services on the river bank as they called to the boy, and a lone rescuer is then seen wading towards him. Eventually, in a life-and-death decision, the pair let go of the tree and are pulled along by the current, at times getting sucked under the fast-flowing river.
Moments later they get close to the bank and the youngster manages to grab a fallen tree trunk, but his rescuer gets carried away by the force of the water.
