BEIJING — A teenage girl walking down a sidewalk in China literally felt the ground beneath her disappear when she fell into a 20-feet deep sinkhole, footage captured by a CCTV camera showed.
The girl, who was talking on her mobile phone, did not notice the ‘caution’ sign which was placed close to the area and said the stretch was susceptible to collapsing under weight.
The footage showed a taxi driver pull up next to the spot where the girl had sunk in and lower himself into the hole in a bid to rescue her.
The man’s effort at pulling the girl out was thwarted repeatedly as more of the surface collapsed over him. He managed to rescue her eventually.
Incidents of people busy talking on mobile phones while walking on streets or driving and getting injured in accidents have risen significantly over the past years.
