OAK CREEK, Wis. — In a city that is no stranger to traumatic events, first responders are taking school safety to the next level.

Recent tragedies in Oak Creek and Newtown, Connecticut breathed new life into a plan cooked up by the Oak Creek Fire Department. Firefighters worked to design a special medical kit for teachers, filled with tools that could save a child’s life in an emergency.

“This is more or less a similar kit that you would see in combat, and I am careful to use that word,” explained Battalion Chief Joe Pulvermacher. The kit contains field dressings, tourniquets, and gauze. All are available for educators to use in the minutes before help arrives — if disaster strikes.
