ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — An Albuquerque man allegedly stabbed his wife to death Saturday night while dragging her around the house in front of their 6- and 12-year-old sons, a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.

The 12-year-old called 911 after his dad, 48-year-old Jerry Chavez, entered the back door of their house at 204 El Ensueño, pulled his wife Sandra Ferrales from the shower into the laundry room and stabbed her with a kitchen knife, BCSO spokesman Aaron Williamson said.

Williamson said Chavez left the house briefly and the elder son called 911 on his mom’s cell phone, but Chavez re-entered the home, and the 911 dispatcher heard screaming in the background.

When officers arrived, Ferrales was dead with numerous stab wounds on her back and a large amount of blood under her body, Williamson said. Her face was also covered in blood, and Williamson said blood was smeared in the laundry room, kitchen and dining room floor; three bloody knives were found in the house.

Williamson said Jerry Chavez was found near Montaño Road and the railroad tracks covered in blood with cuts on his hands, and was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital via ambulance. He was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on a no-bond hold at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Officers interviewed the 12-year-old, who said that Chavez had recently asked Ferrales for a divorce and Ferrales agreed, Williamson said. The boy told officers that Chavez had been living with his mother, not at the El Ensueño house, and when Chavez entered, Ferrales said “You’re not supposed to be here,” according to Williamson.

Chavez was read his Miranda rights and asked for a lawyer, Williamson said.
