MIAMI, Fla. — A 26-year-old Miami man is at a local hospital with a head injury after he jumped from a moving Tri-Rail train after realizing he left his cell phone on a bench at the station, West Palm Beach Police said today.

Eddie Diaz leaped from the southbound train around 7:50 p.m. Monday as it was leaving the station at 201 S. Tamarind Ave.

Witnesses told police Diaz realized he left his cell phone on a bench as the train left the station. Diaz then broke the glass of the emergency safety mechanism, pulled the emergency stop lever and exited through the front passenger door.

Diaz leaped from the train and slipped, and landed on the west platform. He was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in critical condition.

The investigation is still open, police said.

There were about 50 passengers on board when the incident happened. The train was held at the station while city police conducted an investigation. At 10 p.m., police finished their initial investigation and passengers were allowed to resume their travels, Tri-Rail spokeswoman Bonnie Arnold said Monday.
