CAPITOLA, Calif. — A 74-year-old Morgan Hill man was taken to a hospital Monday after he accidentally shot himself at a New Brighton State Beach campground.

State Parks Public Safety Superintendent Mike McMenamy said the man shot himself once in the abdomen with a .22-caliber revolver about 4:45 p.m. The campground is near McGregor Drive and Park Avenue near Capitola.

The man was transported by ambulance to Dominican Hospital. His injuries were not life threatening and he was released from the hospital Monday night, authorities said.

Firearms are not allowed in any state parks. The man faces potential gun charges in the shooting, McMenamy said.

State Parks leaders continued to investigate the shooting on Tuesday.

American Medical Response, Central Fire and Capitola police also responded to the call.
