BAYONNE, N.J. — Hundreds of mourners waited patiently outside the Bayonne Memorial Home Sunday afternoon to say their final goodbyes to Bayonne EMT Michael Burke, who died in a fatal car accident Thursday morning.

A McCabe Ambulance EMT, Burke, 23, was off-duty driving a Jeep Wagon GRC when it struck an abutment near the railroad bridge at Avenue A and 7th Street at 12:56 a.m., said Bayonne Police Chief Ralph Scianni. An unidentified passenger was transported to Jersey City Medical Center. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.

Ambulances were parked in front of the funeral home, as a line of blue uniformed EMT’s braced the cold to pay their final respects to Burke. “Not enough could be said about Michael,” said Christopher Negron, 28, a volunteer member of the Bayonne Fire Canteen.
