Firefighters rescue horse from septic tank

The firefighters tied a hose around the horse to lift it out

PENNGROVE, Calif. — Calif. firefighters were called to rescue a horse that accidentally fell into a septic tank Monday morning.

Ali, the 9-year-old horse, was found with his back legs stuck in the old septic tank, which is about six feet deep, according to the Press Democrat.

Ali’s front legs were hanging outside the tank.

Firefighters were initially stumped with how to rescue the equine.

“That type of animal, we wanted to do it gently. We couldn’t put chains around it,” Rancho Adobe Fire Protection Acting Capt. Jimmy Bernal said.

Crews ended up wrapping part of a 50-foot hose around Ali’s back side and gently pulled her out of tank.

“He was pretty dirty, but we got him out. And he was limping a little bit, but he appeared to be OK,” Capt. Bernal told the Press Democrat.

Besides a few cuts, Ali was not seriously injured. He apparently got through a fence and made his way to the septic tank where he fell.

“Out of 11 years, that was my first horse call,” Bernal said.
