SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Climbing a ladder and fighting his way through smoke so thick he hardly could see the man calling out from a balcony, a firefighter lost his balance and fell 20 feet, landing at the feet of his fellow first responders Thursday afternoon at a Northwest Side condo complex.
“These firefighters, they had a victim with smoke inhalation, they had a firefighter down with serious injuries, right off the bat, with fire showing through the roof,” Fire Chief Charles Hood said.
Because of the extensive damage, it will be some time before investigators determine what caused the fire that destroyed 27 units in a single building of the Castlewood Condominiums in the 4100 block of Medical Drive, Hood said. The damage was contained mainly to the third floor.
