ALBANY, N.Y. — Legislation requiring New York driver to slow down or move over for ambulance personnel and volunteer firefighters was signed into law Thursday.
The law previously only applied to drivers approaching stopped police, emergency or maintenance vehicles with red, white or amber flashing lights. The new law includes vehicles with blue or green flashing lights operated by ambulance personnel and volunteer firefighters during roadside emergencies, the Associated Press reported.
Highway drivers are required to slow down and move from the lane immediately adjacent to a first responder vehicle stationed on a shoulder.
Violation of the law will result in a $275 fine and three points to one’s license.
