Calif. firefighter-medic killed after struck by motorist

Firefighters were responding to a crash on the highway but it is unclear why they were stopped on the ramp

PALM DESERT, Calif. — A Cal Fire firefighter was killed Friday, July 5, when he was struck by a pickup truck on an Interstate 10 onramp in Palm Desert.

The firefighter with Thousand Palms Engine Company 35 was hit by the truck while standing on the Monterey Avenue onramp about 9:40 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Stephanie Hamilton said.

The firefighter was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center where he died from his injuries. Neither the firefighter nor the driver has been identified.
