The floor gave way at an early morning residential fire, claiming the life of a Capt. and badly hurting another

OWEGO, N.Y. — Capt. Michael Porcari, 34, died late Monday night when he fell through the floor at a residential structure fire in Owego, N.Y. Firefighter Daniel Gavin, 28, was also injured in the collapse and is now at the burn unit in an upstate N.Y. hospital.

Porcari had been a firefighter with Owego Fire Department since 1995; he leaves behind a wife and two daughters.

Owego Deputy Fire Chief Bob Williams told PressConnects.com that Porcari, “was a dedicated fireman and captain.”

Gavin is a lieutenant who joined the department in 2000.

One local media outlet reports that a call for a medical helicopter was denied due to bad weather.

Six fire departments responded to the structure, which burned to the ground.

Owego is an all-volunteer fire department that protects 26,000 residents in a 63-square-mile area out of four stations.
