Fire chief takes part-time paramedic job

The fire chief will help fill empty slots in overnight EMS shifts

DUDLEY, Mass. — Dudley fire chief will be moonlighting for his own department as a part-time paramedic.

Telegram.com reported Fire Chief Dean Kochanowski has made an agreement with city officials to help fill vacant paramedic shifts.

According to the agreement, Kochanowski is eligible to work per diem shifts from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. at the rate of $22 per hour.

Selectman unanimously approved the employment contract last week.

“It is better that he does that work and stay here than what he currently has to do, which is do that work for someplace out of town, for some other entity,” Selectman Paul M. Joseph said.

Kochanowski said open slots in the overnight shifts do not occur often, but he is ready to step in as needed.

“It’s a win-win for everybody because I’m here more,” said Kochanowski.
