PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — A man who fatally shot a firefighter who was responding to a 911 call died.
The Washington Post reported that Darrell Lumpkin, 63, was in the hospital for a few weeks after suffering a stroke. He died a week after being released due to a heart condition, according to his attorney, Brian McDaniel.
Lumpkin was sentenced to four years in prison for a weapon charge but had not yet gone to jail because the court was thinking about modifying his sentence, McDaniel said.
McDaniel said Lumpkin was under a significant amount of stress after accidentally shooting John “Skillet” Ulmschneider and injuring firefighter Kevin Swain. They responded to a medical call and broke into his home because they thought he was suffering a medical emergency.
Lumpkin was suffering from a diabetic episode when they came through the door and believed they were intruders.
“He was very sorry for the family and their loss and very concerned about the prospect of going to jail given his advanced age,” McDaniel said.
