LODD: Wash. firefighter-EMT dies in sleep after shift

Charles “Doug” Archer, 49, had responded to a residential fire and an aid call before succumbing in his sleep

VALLEYFORD, Wash. — A volunteer firefighter died Nov. 28 in his sleep after returning home from shift.

Firefighter Charles “Doug” Archer, 49, with the Spokane County Fire District 8, had responded with crews to a residential fire and an aid call. When firefighter Archer returned home to rest, he died in his sleep, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Firefighter Archer had over 30 years of experience as a volunteer firefighter. He had also been an engine boss, fire investigator and EMT. He was an active member with the Washington Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators.

A memorial service will be held Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. at Hennessey Funeral Home.
