RIGA, NY — Barry Miller, 50, a Bergen (N.Y.) Fire Department EMT/firefighter, as well as a county coroner, was killed Wednesday morning when the ambulance he was riding in collided with a construction vehicle.
Miller was riding in the front passenger seat of the ambulance and died of his injuries at the scene, reported WHAM.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says three members of an ambulance crew from the volunteer fire department in western New York were en route to an emergency call, reported the Daily News.
A sheriff’s office investigator said the driver, EMT Zackery Czudak, 30, of the east bound ambulance may have been distracted by sun glare when he drove into the rear of a slow-moving construction vehicle at about 7 a.m.
Czudak told deputies he slowed the ambulance because of the sun glare and patches of fog in the area. EMT Gina Bliss, 52, was riding in the rear of the ambulance and was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Czudak was not injured.
