Scholarship Supports Students in Emergency Management Program
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — Adelphi University is pleased to announce that it has received a generous donation from Jonathan B. Kohan, chief of the Atlantic Beach Fire-Rescue to create a 9/11 Memorial Endowment Scholarship in memory of and tribute to those in the fire service who gave their lives in the line of duty on September 11, 2001.
The scholarship, which will be offered for the first time in fall 2006, will be given once a year to a student in Adelphi’s Emergency Management Graduate Certificate Program who has completed nine credits, earned a 3.0 grade point average, and has a commendable community service record. Recipients must live in Nassau or Suffolk County, and preference will be given to fire service personnel serving in Nassau or Suffolk Counties or the five boroughs of New York.
Adelphi’s interdisciplinary 18-credit graduate certificate in Emergency Management prepares professionals to respond effectively to disasters. Developed in consultation with the Nassau County commissioner of emergency management, the program draws on the extensive resources of Adelphi’s Schools of Business, Nursing, and Social Work; the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies; and the College of Arts and Sciences.
Mr. Kohan is a vice president in the Real Estate Capital Markets Group at Wachovia Securities and resides in Atlantic Beach, New York with his wife and son. He presently serves as the chief of the department of the Atlantic Beach Fire -Rescue. He was recently re-appointed to serve as a logistics specialist with a FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Task Force and serves as a member of the Congressional Fire Caucus.
