HOLTSVILLE, N.Y. — Authorities say a patient being transferred from a hospital somehow got out of a moving ambulance and was fatally struck by a car in New York.
Suffolk County police say the driver of the car that hit the patient Monday night in Holtsville, on Long Island, then fled the scene.
Police say 51-year-old Frank Ligrnetta, of Bay Shore, was being taken from Stony Brook University Hospital to a facility in Amityville at the time.
They say he was with an attendant in the back of the ambulance when he “exited” the moving vehicle. It’s not clear how or why he did that.
The patient died at the scene.
The investigation into the circumstances of the death is continuing.
