SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Officials say at least two dozen people have been injured by an ammonia leak at a meat-processing plant in South San Francisco.
South San Francisco fire officials say the leak was reported early Friday at the Columbus Salame plant.
Sixteen people were treated at the scene and eight others were taken to hospitals for observation after being exposed to anhydrous ammonia, used as a refrigerant at the facility.
Officials are investigating the cause of the leak, which has been capped.
After the leak was reported, authorities evacuated the area and blocked off nearby streets.
The same plant was the site of a four-alarm fire in July.
