Crane impales Canadian commuter train

CALGARY, Alberta — At least six people were injured in Canada Wednesday when the boom of a mobile crane impaled a light-rail commuter train in Calgary, Alberta.

Witnesses told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. an electric utility truck-mounted crane swung into the path of the three-car train around 10:20 a.m. and pierced the front window near the driver.

Emergency Medical Services spokesman Stuart Brideaux told the Globe and Mail newspaper the train was derailed and some 30 passengers were flung about the cars by the impact.

The train driver sustained serious injuries, and five others, including a child were taken to hospital for treatment for less serious injuries, the report said.

Rescue crews had to use ladders to rescue passengers from the train after power was cut off to the line and traffic snarled along the major thoroughfare, the Globe said.
