SAN FRANCISCO – EMS1.com, the leading online resource for EMS professionals, has teamed up with Calibre Press, the top provider for law enforcement training nationwide, to present the EMS1 Street Survival seminar, an event designed to provide critical, lifesaving training and education regarding potential threats that medics encounter on the job.
Exclusively sponsored by American Military University, the course will cover a variety of topics including threats posed by gangs, hidden weapon dangers, PTSD prevention, dealing with intoxicated and potentially combative people, restraint techniques, removing weapons of opportunity, and more. The seminar is designed for first responders, EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, flight teams, and emergency department staff.
The first EMS1 Street Survival seminar will be held at Bally’s Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey on December 13-14, 2011.
“With the threats facing emergency responders today, it is not enough for prehospital providers to have dynamic clinical skills. It is also essential to have a situational awareness of threats that may affect operations and personal safety. A seminar like this is essential to teach responders how to stay aware and effectively respond to threats as they arise,” said Anthony Mangeri, Professor at American Military University. “AMU is excited to partner with EMS1 and Calibre Press to bring first responders this lifesaving seminar.”
Instructor Mike Taigman will be leading the two-day course. Over the last 37 years, he has worked with EMS organizations all over the world and presented at hundreds of conferences. In the 1980s, Taigman co-created the original EMS Street Survival seminars. He teaches graduate school in the Emergency Health Services Program at the University of Maryland and works with several large 911 EMS systems in California.
“EMS is involved in nearly every shooting, stabbing, riot, gang fight, and bombing in the world,” Taigman said. “The potential for us to become victims of violence from patients, family members, and bystanders is higher than ever. It’s time for us to quit relying on luck and learn real skills for staying safe.”
Since 1980, Calibre Press has been providing law enforcement education, training and information to help save officers’ lives while reducing officer and agency liability. Through the widely recognized Street Survival seminars, Calibre’s mission is to provide the most informative and motivational survival training experience available to the first responder community.
The cost to attend the two-day EMS1 Street Survival seminar is $215 and attendees will receive 16 hours accredited NJ-OEMS-CEU’s (pending). Group discounts are available and both EMS1 and FireRescue1 members will receive an exclusive 10 percent discount on tuition with discount code “EMS1SS”.
