GRAYS HARBOR, Wash. — It’s not like the movies. Firefighters on Grays Harbor don’t spend most of their days rescuing people from burning buildings and battling raging infernos.
Many departments can go a whole week — even longer — without responding to an actual fire. But that doesn’t mean firefighters spend their days sitting around the station watching TV or playing cards.
Harbor firefighters have dual personalities and actually spend a majority of their time as emergency medical technicians or paramedics. Hoquiam firefighters have to have at least an EMT certification in order to join the department. Of the 21 firefighters, 13 are paramedics.
