WASHINGTON — Mayor Adrian Fenty expressed frustration Monday that officials had failed to move fast enough to upgrade water mains after century-old pipes thwarted firefighters’ efforts to battle a four-alarm blaze in Adams Morgan.
Fire crews were slowed for about 30 minutes because the aging pipes were too small to produce enough water pressure to sufficiently attack the flames that tore through the top of the four-story condominium at 2627 Adams Mill Road, fire officials said.
The firefighters had to unwind 4,000-feet of hose around the block over the Duke Ellington Bridge to two 20-inch lines on Connecticut Avenue in Woodley Park.
