DUNN, NY — A New York man was arrested near Dunn over the weekend after smashing an emergency medical services vehicle with a hammer and then attacking a state trooper, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Romeo Ribeiro of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., was traveling south on I-95 shortly before midnight Saturday when his vehicle was rear-ended just north of Dunn. Ribeiro walked away from the scene armed with a hammer, said Sgt. T.I. Baldwin of the Highway Patrol.
When an EMS vehicle arrived, Ribeiro used the hammer to dent the vehicle’s hood, smash the headlights and break a window, Baldwin said. He later came at a trooper with the hammer but was subdued.
No one was injured. Ribeiro was charged with assault on an officer, hit-and-run, and property damage.
He was placed in the Harnett County jail in lieu of $3,000 bail.
