WILSON, N.C. — Police said a woman crashed a stolen ambulance into an elderly woman’s apartment hours after an SUV smashed into a tree Sunday morning.
Both wrecks happened near Wilson Memorial Hospital. Police were still investigating the crashes late Sunday.
A 43-year-old woman stole a private ambulance from the ambulance bay at Wilson Medical Center, according to police spokesman Sgt. Steve Stroud. She ran off the road and hit four parked cars before crashing into an apartment building on the 2100 block of Glendale Drive around 8:25 a.m., Stroud said.
The crash injured an 84-year-old woman who lived in the apartment. Police said she was taken to Wilson Medical Center and transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. She was in stable condition Sunday afternoon and is expected to recover from her injuries, Stroud said.
Police did not name the woman accused of stealing the Johnston Ambulance Service ambulance or the woman hurt in the crash.
Stroud said police found the ambulance thief in the woods after the crash. She’s receiving a mental health evaluation and is being held on an involuntary commitment order, Stroud said.
Police have obtained warrants for the woman’s arrest on charges of larceny of a motor vehicle, felony hit and run and reckless driving. Stroud said police would serve the warrants after she’s released from medical care.
The first crash happened around 3 a.m. Sunday when a sport utility vehicle struck a tree on Wooten Boulevard during a police chase. Initial reports indicated that six people were trapped inside.
Wilson firefighters helped free the passengers from the crumpled SUV and paramedics rushed them to nearby Wilson Medical Center.
Police didn’t name the people involved in the crash or give the reason for the car chase Sunday evening.
