BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — An ambulance, transporting a patient in cardiac arrest, was struck in an intersection early Tuesday morning by a car that drove through a flashing red light. The female driver of the car and her male passenger were both killed in the collision.
A Battle Creek firefighter, who was in the ambulance, was injured, reported WSBT.
The condition of the other members of the ambulance crew was not reported.
Battle Creek police said a LifeCare Ambulance was traveling northbound with lights and the siren running, reported WOOD TV.
The woman’s westbound vehicle drove through a flashing red light and hit the ambulance around 1 a.m. The woman behind the wheel of the vehicle was dead on impact and the man who was in the passenger seat died on scene, according to police.
The patient was transferred to another ambulance and taken to Battle Creek Bronson emergency department where he was pronounced dead moments later.
Police said speed and alcohol may have played a role in the crash. The Battle Creek Police Department accident reconstruction team was called to the scene to take over the investigation.
