OSHA considers how to protect fire, EMS personnel from violence

Officials are hoping to obtain information about the extent and nature of workplace violence in the industry and the effectiveness of interventions used

WASHINGTON — The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is considering whether to commence rulemaking proceedings on a standard aimed at preventing workplace violence for first responders.

Workplace violence affects myriad of health care, hospital staff, fire and EMS personnel around the world. OSHA is seeking more detailed information on topics such as effective strategies for reducing incidents of violence in these settings.

Comments and material can be submitted electronically to www.regulations.gov, the Federal eRulemaking Portal or via mail. The submission deadline is April 6, 2017.

OSHA will also hold a public meeting to comment on the need for a standard to prevent workplace violence in health care and emergency services. The meeting will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, Jan. 10, 2017 at the U.S. Department of Labor. Registration is required to attend.
