HURON VALLEY, Mich. — Emergency medical services workers from Huron Valley Ambulance recently filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board in Detroit to form their own union with United EMS Workers – American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
Unionizing will be put to a vote by the 413 paramedics and EMTs at HVA, and if 207 of the 413 vote yes, the workers will be able to form their own independent union.
Trish McGrail, an HVA paramedic, said that she started the union talk with a few co-workers to get their feedback about the process. The reason she began the movement was to improve working conditions for the EMTs and paramedics, she said.
