Medic delayed responding to suicidal call to buy electronics

The ex-employee agreed she visited an electronics store without seeking authorization, but denied misusing an ambulance for personal purposes

SCOTLAND — A paramedic delayed attending an urgent call to help a depressed and suicidal woman to pick up equipment for her home computer, a misconduct hearing was told today.

Former Scottish Ambulance Service worker Victoria Arnott admitted stopping en route to the woman’s home to do personal shopping at a PC World store while on duty in Fife in July last year. The ex-employee agreed she had visited the store in in Dunfermline without seeking authorization from the ambulance control center, but denied misusing an ambulance for personal purposes.

Ms. Arnott, who joined the ambulance service in 1999, had been allocated a doctor’s urgent call to attend the home of a depressed and suicidal woman and take her to hospital, a hearing was told. She was appeared before a three-member panel of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)’s conduct and competence committee.
