GRAYSON, Ky. — A former paramedic with Carter County Emergency Medical Services is suspected of having stolen narcotics from the agency.
Kentucky State Police at Ashland on Tuesday said the paramedic was initially suspended from work pending an investigation into the theft of several ampuls of fentanyl, but has since been fired by the agency. The paramedic’s emergency services license also has been revoked, the KSP said.
The KSP said charges against the individual are pending the completion of its investigation, and that the suspect’s name will be released when charges are filed.
The investigation into the stolen fentanyl was launched on June 21 after the KSP received an auditor’s report indicating the ampuls were missing. During the course of the probe, it was determined several ampuls of fentanyl and multiple doses of morphine had been removed and were unaccounted for, and that additional ampuls of fentanyl had been tampered with by having the drug removed from them and replaced with an unknown substance, the KSP said.
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opiate pain reliever that is approximately 100 times more potent than morphine.
On Monday, the KSP said it received an additional report involving the theft of several doses of morphine from Carter EMS. That investigation is also ongoing and isn’t related to the initial report received in June, the KSP said.
Both cases are being investigated by Detective Chris Carter.
