DES MOINES, Iowa — Gov. Terry Branstad on Monday defended his veto of legislation this year that would have led to a statewide study of how to improve Iowa’s emergency medical services.
The Republican chief executive said that while there may be a few isolated problems within the state’s EMS system, there are “literally thousands of very dedicated volunteers” who are giving of their time and talent to help Iowa communities.
Branstad, who spoke by teleconference call while on a trade mission to India, was asked about his veto in the wake of anarticle published by the Des Moines Sunday Register about issues surrounding the lack of criminal background checks for EMS workers.
