BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — A long-time EMS director of Berkeley County unexpectedly resigned three days after accusations of authorizing the use of a mass casualty transport unit to shuttle guests to and from a fire chief’s wedding.
After 10 years in the position, Box Mixter stepped down, effective immediately, on March 18, county spokesman Chip Boling told the Berkeley Independent.
“It was his choice to resign,” Boling said. “He was not asked to resign.”
Rumors circulated that Mixter allowed for the use of the bus during a March 15 wedding. It did not obstruct or delay service, and was used in a response to children injured in a school bus collision two days later, Boling said.
The county does not plan to pursue legal or disciplinary action, and EMS Deputy Director Becky Blair will serve as an interim director while the county launches a nationwide search for a permanent replacement, Boling said.
Mixter was named South Carolina Service Director of the Year in 2011.
