BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A pair of responders who transported an elderly veteran to the hospital returned to his home and finished his yardwork afterward.

WBRC reported that Birmingham Fire and Rescue firefighter-paramedic Tommy Carter and firefighter Timothy Kennedy responded to the home of a 30-year military veteran after he reported chest pains while mowing his lawn.

The pair transported the man to the hospital and then returned to his home to finish mowing his grass.

“I could tell that he was a kind, gentle, genuine person, and sometimes you meet people like that during this job and they touch your heart,” Carter told WBRC. “That makes the decision even easier when you meet someone that has that kind of personality.”

“We commend firefighter-paramedic Tommy Carter and firefighter Timothy Kennedy for your continued dedication to providing the citizens of Birmingham #ExcellenceThroughService,” the department said in a Facebook post.
