WACO, Texas — A paramedic who has been in the hospital for four months after pushing his partner out of the way of a drunk driver will return home just in time for the holidays.
KWTX reported that Rory Barros, who was critically injured after being pinned against his ambulance by a drunk driver at the scene of a crash, will be discharged in time for Christmas.
“I just can’t wait to get in my recliner or my couch, I don’t care what it is at this point,” Barros said. “I just want to be home.”
Barros has been undergoing rehabilitation after enduring 14 surgeries and having his leg amputated.
“You know we started out after the accident not even knowing even after we got to the emergency room if I was actually going to live or not ... and now I feel great. I feel that I can move forward by leaps and bounds and just take everything on,” Barros said. “My spirits are on cloud nine I am just ecstatic that I’ve come as far as I have.”
Barros will be able to return back to work after eventually being fitted with a prosthesis.
“The one goal that I’m striving for is to go back to duty. I want to go back and serve the people of Waco and I want to go back and get back with my co-workers.”
