SARASOTA, Fla. — Four people were hospitalized Tuesday after smoking synthetic marijuana, or “spice,” or according to the Sarasota Police Department.

About 5 p.m., officers on patrol in Five Points Park noticed a man face down in the park. As they went to the man, who was unresponsive, two other men and a woman also collapsed, according to a news release.

“The first man who collapsed began fighting with EMS. He was able to be restrained and place with rescue,” police said. “The second male became very combative and violent. Five firefighters assisted the paramedic in restraining the man.

“The last two victims, man and a woman, were not violent but were extremely sick.”

One of the men told officers they were smoking synthtic marijuana that had been sprayed with embalming fluid and/or formaldehyde, according to the report.

“These substances, such as spice,’ are not regulated and can contain substances that could be fatal if ingested,” said police Capt. Patrick Robinson.
