NEW YORK — A Bronx man was indicted on first-degree assault charges after an attack on an FDNY EMT that resulted in several injuries, including nerve damage.

Thomas Wright, 32, was arraigned this week on multiple assault charges stemming from the incident, in which he allegedly FDNY EMT Nicholas Cody, 20, on the shoulder and slammed him into an ambulance door while being transported, NBC 4 New York reported.

“The EMT is a 20-year-old man just starting his career of helping people in the Bronx. We will not tolerate assaults on our first responders,” said Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark. “They face many hazards on the job, but they should never be subjected to violent acts.”

Following the attack on Cody in October, and an attack on another EMT days later that resulted in a broken nose, the FDNY released a PSA warning that assaults on EMTs and paramedics are felonies punishable by up to seven years in prison.
