FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Two paramedics are being credited with spotting a house fire and saving six people Thursday.
Paramedics Nate Stine and Jeromy Yadin were in their ambulance when they saw smoke. They initially thought it was fog, but realized it was too cold outside to be fog.
“Just seeing the amount of smoke that we saw and how much smoke was billowing out of the attic, we knew it was a situation that had to be taken care of immediately,” Yadin told WANE.
The duo arrived at the burning home and began banging on the doors and windows. They were able to help Shafonda Lewis, her two children and three grandchildren evacuate the house before firefighters arrived.
“At first, I didn’t know what it was so I was basically like who’s trying to get in my house,” Lewis said. “I didn’t know what was going on.”
Firefighters arrived to the scene and quickly extinguished the attic fire. No one was injured.
“We got out safe. Even when we got outside, they [Stine and Yadin] made sure we were safe outside,” Lewis said. “So at this point, I have to thank God and also thank these two men that came by to save us.”
